X Factor spoof for children's TV

Simon Cowell will be turned into a lion
for an X Factor spoof

The show, for children's channel CBBC, will be screened next year and is described as a cross between the reality show and The Muppets.

Chief judge for the Zoo Factor series is Clive, a vain, lazy lion who eats the acts who do not make the grade at auditions.

The show features a host of wild animals desperate to impress the judges. But instead of million-pound recording deals, the ultimate prize is survival in a show where the catchphrase is: "If you're beaten, you're eaten."

Each week puppet contestants will parade their dubious talents and sob stories before the judging panel, which also includes Celia, a glamorous showbiz seal, and Barry, a monkey noted for his inappropriate comments.

It is hosted by a mumsy marsupial called Hilly Wallaby.

Contestants will include bell-ringing sheep, leopard conjurors, a bear with singing fleas and a dancing elephant who has a mouse partner.

The show, aimed at eight to 10 year olds has been scripted by Mark Evans, who has written for Saturday Night Takeaway and Strictly Come Dancing, and Will Ing who worked on Pop Idol and 8 Out Of 10 Cats.

Cardiff-based animation firm Calon, which was behind Superted and Fireman Sam, is co-producing the show with Telegael Teoranta. It is currently being filmed in Galway, Ireland.
