This was originally written to be just one episode with a police officer being kidnapped midway through. The producers asked Ken Sanzel to make it a 2-part episode. They decided that Megan should be the one kidnapped to make the 2nd part more dramatic.

Charlie: (explaining math to Ian and Don) You know I, I've been running expressions assuming a dog chasing a cat. But its actually a dog chasing a cat, chasing a mouse!
Ian: I thought it was an airplane?!
Charlie: Oh well, cats and dogs work better now. (edit) (Larry drives away and Megan heads for her car.)
Crystal: Not exactly the type of guy I pictured you with.
(Megan goes for her gun)
Crystal: I really wouldn't if I were you. (edit) Megan: (To Larry) Well, I didn't run away from home at 16, but I didn't walk either. And unlike Crystal, I can live with most of my decisions. Does that make you uncomfortable?
Larry: (Shaking his head) I'm a man who lives in hotel rooms, and sleeps on couches.
(pauses)
Larry: Does that make you uncomfortable?
Megan: Noooo, I find it oddly attractive.
Larry: You constantly put me in mind of the M57 Nebula, with these endless layers upon layers of complexities.
Megan: You know, I don't think I will ever get tired of being compared to the M57 Nebula. (edit) Colby: The only thing a teacher ever gave me was detention. (edit) Alan: Larry, I'm going to give you the same advice I give to all the geniuses I know.
Larry: Which is?
Alan: Don't be an idiot. (edit)

Larry: You constantly put me in mind of the M57 Nebula, with these endless layers upon layers of complexities.
M57, also known as the the Ring Nebula and NGC 6720 is 2,300 light years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. It is not visible to the naked eye; through a telescope, in visible light it looks like a multicolored ring. If it is viewed at other wavelengths, including infrared, ultraviolet and radio telescopy, it reveals a far more complex structure, which Larry was using as a metaphor for people being more complex than they appear at first study.
It is usually referred to as the Ring Nebula rather than by its catalog numbers. (edit)
