This sitcom introduced us to the staff of 3 West. Annie Roland (Arnetia Walker), head nurse, was a strong-willed working mom who was married to a fireman. Sandy Miller (Stephanie Hodge), was the cynical, but dedicated, second in command. The best friend of Empty Nest's Laverne, Sandy was a Texan prone to dating the wrong men. Gina Cuevas (Ada Maris) was an immigrant from the small country of San Pokeno. Virgin Gina spent her days lusting after Dr. Hank Kaplan. Greg Vincent (Jeff Altman) was a goofy anti-authoratative type with a penchant for physically attacking the doctors. And Julie Milbury (Mary Jo Keenan) was the flaky, neurotic newcomer -- a former psychiatric-social-worker who was deathly afraid of germs. Dr. Hank Kaplan (Kip Gilman) was the divorced, financially strapped doctor with a heart of gold. Paco Ortiz (Carlos LaCamara) was the well-mannered Latin orderly. Apparently the writers didn't know what an orderly actually does -- they had Paco doing everything from mopping floors to transferring patients to loading cadavers into the morgue. Dr. Riskin (Florence Stanley) was the cynical old crone who always knew what was best. The second season became a little lighter and saw the departure of Greg and Dr. Riskin and the additions of male nurse Luke Fitzgerald (Markus Flanagan), a handsome but rigid (and slightly-scary) loner; and Jack Trenton, a crooked financier, sentenced to community service as punishment for insider trading. Luke was good at his job, but certainly wasn't a people person -- never showing up at morning meetings and constantly rubbing the staff the wrong way. Jack, on the other hand, was a people person -- but he didn't like these people. Jack's only friend was Paco, whom he always made do all the work. By the end of this season, Gina had finally lost her virginity to Hank, and announced that she was pregnant in the season finale.

Season three became even more slapstick and saw the departures of Luke and Sandy and the addition of Casey MacAfee (Loni Anderson), the hotel-manager-turned-administrator. Lovely, self-centered Casey didn't hesitate to let the staff know who was in charge -- despite the fact she didn't have a clue how to run the hospital. She spent a lot of her time fending off Jack, who was determined to bed his new boss. In the final season, Gina and Hank finally took their relationship to the next level and were wedded mere minutes before the birth of their daughter, Jauanita.

After multiple retoolings, the show disappeared from the air for good in 1993. It has since been seen in many countries outside of the USA and briefly found a home from 1995-96 on the Lifetime cable network.

Many people have expressed interest in getting episodes of the show on video or DVD. Since masses of series are now getting a DVD releases, go to TV Shows on DVD, register and vote on the show (and any other series you want to see on DVD). Support from TV fans does make a difference in getting the studios to release series on disc.

  Series I & II were OK. hide « show »

  From the creators of the Golden Girls was this hospital sitcom. Some of the characters were not unalike, Sandy (Dorothy), Julie (Rose)& Dr Riskin (Sophia). Nevertheless it was an enjoyable show. The second series, without the sublime Florence Stanley, was bearable it did have Dinah Manoff make regular cameos. The third series saw Stephanie Hodge replaced with Loni Anderson, F****** awful.

  Hit and miss hide « show »

  I really enjoyed the first season of Nurses. It had really good characters that played well off each other. Unfortunately in season 2, characters disappeared without explanation and new, obnoxious characters surfaced. By season 3 series star Stephanie Hodge was gone, again without explanation, and Loni Anderson came aboard. Love Loni, but her character was also somewhat obnoxious and annoying. Even so, this show fit in nicely with the rest of NBC's Saturday night line-up.

  Fun spin off hide « show »

  I liked the show Nurse. It was a fun spin off of the Golden Girls and Empty nest. It was a fun show to watch that didn't have all drama and mind boggling situations. It was just a fun and funny show that you could watch and laugh at. The cast seemed to work well together. There are not to many shows on that you can just laugh at. It was a good clean family show that was purely made for entertaining. A medical show witout all the drama.I know when I was in the hospital at the time the show was on, I remember the nurses would come in and watch it with me and we would just laugh. I miss the show
