The potential images those words created alone caused more controversy for this series, before it had even premiered. The "Bible Belt" was up in arms and no-one had even seen an episode. In most of those southern states the local ABC affiliates refused to carry the show, which was a shame because aside from a "little" bare flesh and a couple of harsh words, they missed out on a quality television show. Of course it wasn't long before they realized it really was no big deal.

Late during the first season, Steven Bochco said during an acceptance speech at the 20th Annual People's Choice Awards:

"In spite of those who seek to legislate what we can and cannot see on our own television sets in the privacy of our own homes. NYPD Blue has succeeded because the American people, properly so, prefer to judge for themselves."

At those awards the show was voted "favorite new television dramatic series" and "favorite television dramatic series" the first year it was eligible. The show has been nominated for and won numerous awards. Check out this IMDb link for more information. Most notably the series has been nominated for an Emmy 84 times and has won 20 of those times and Dennis Franz has claim to four of those statues.

Before this series, some of the stars had an affiliation with Steven Bochco from his previous highly acclaimed series Hill Street Blues. David Caruso had guest starred in two episodes and during the 3rd season, Dennis Franz guest starred as Det. Sal Benedetto in 5 episodes and was killed off in his last appearance. Franz officially joined the cast in that show's 6th season as Lt. Norman Buntz and stayed with the show until it ended. Then the Buntz character was brought back for a short-lived comedy series called Beverly Hills Buntz the following season. This series didn't last because it was erratically scheduled as a fill-in and then couldn't build an audience. James McDaniel also appeared in a Hill Street Blues episode and then also appeared in Steven Bochco's attempt at something new, a musical police drama called Cop Rock. When Caruso left early on in the series, another Bochco veteran was called upon; Jimmy Smits who played Victor Sifuentes on Bochco's L.A. Law was brought in to play new detective Bobby Simone.

While other actors have left with big screen ambitions, two actors have left the series to move onto other Bochco created programs. In 1996 there was an attempt to launch a comedy that featured as one of the characters in the ensemble PAA John Irvin played by Bill Brochtrup. Public Morals only aired one episode and was pulled. I would hesitate to call it a spin-off, since only one (at that time) minor character from this series appeared on it, but I suppose an argument could be made. After all, Dennis Franz did take his Norman Buntz character from Hill Street Blues to Beverly Hills Buntz, a comedy series that lasted much longer than Public Morals did. Bill Brochtrup returned back to the 15th and made several guest appearances before becoming a full cast member in the 6th season. In 2001 Kim Delaney left this series (with a loophole that would allow her to come back) to star in Philly. That series wasn't too long lived and Det. Russell has subsequently returned for a guest spot or two.

While this cast has undergone a rotation of lead actors, Dennis Franz was the glue that held this series together.

Most of the show's run was at Tuesdays at 10pm ET on ABC. The show was simulcast in HDTV. With the 2000-2001 TV season, the show became ABC's first regularly scheduled entertainment series to be broadcast in high definition.

  I can't believe that sales could really impact their decision THAT much to put subsequent seasons on DVD. Firstly, there are TONS of shows out there right now that have had less commercial appeal than NYPD Blue, and they're all being released on DVD. Secondly, with a show as popular as this, such as X-Files or Seinfeld, you would think they would practically RUSH to get them out. Yet, how is it that X-Files has all 9 seasons out on DVD and NYPD Blue has only 2?? Maybe it's the packaging? The packaging for X-Files is a lot more tidy, ad-worthy. The packaging for the NYPD Blue season DVDs look like S**T. That could've impacted sales quite a bit, since in America, advertising can make a big financial impact. Further thoughts?   Better than some other shows. hide « show »

  I think NYPD Blues is a decent show, at the most. Some of the time, I got bored, but there were also times in which the show was really fun to watch. I have to say that the drama on the show was always decent. The action was streaky, as it would be on the show one episode, then the next three it wouldn't even be there. The one thing I didn't like at all was the cast changes. It ruined the show for me because the replacement characters were rather bland. Overall, this was an okay show when it was on. Thank you.

  Beats Hill Street Blues as the best T.V. cop drama of all time. hide « show »

  I do sorely miss this show, but to ask that it be brought back would be a mistake, cause it's just too late for that. Dennis Franz's character would be getting too close to retirement now for it to be believable for one thing. I've seen nothing on television as of late that could even begin to fill the hole left by NYPD Blue in the cop show department, and I guess that it's going to be awhile before that ever happens...NYPD Blue left some mighty huge standards for any future contenders to live up to. For me, and while it was on, this show was an absolute never-miss every single week.

  just plain LOVE it hide « show »

  I started watching NYPD blue when Andy partnered with Clarke. When he fell in love and married Connie, I could not cry harder!! I just absolutely love this show. I am very angry that they will probably not make anymore seasons!! Why start then. Or just make a limited amount and the die hard fans can get them.   just voting might help. I certainly dont know what else to do, or who to do it to!! I have watched reruns over and over and have still missed some episodes and tnt quit running them during the day, yet show Law and Order, not a bad little show though, a million times a day. What gives?

  great cops nypd blue hide « show »

  there are a lot of great cop shows third watch, hill street blues ,cops, law and order svu,and law and order crimmial intent. but i have to say the nypd blue is one of the best cop shows ever to grace our tv screens. when it first aired on tv. i was suprised by the way it portrayed real new york police. some of the stories where based on real cases. i enjoyed the wise cracking comments from andy, and it also showed us that all the officers also had a soft side.this is one of the best cop shows to this day.

  Ground breaking show for all to enjoy. I love it hide « show »

  NYPD BLUE was created to be a ground breaking show and it was but in more ways then the creator intended. It made TV more real. There wasn't always a happy ending. People had sex and it didn't last. It was great.
  
  This show didn't only depend on one charactoor to win. like most police shows before it NYPD BLUE. If a charactor left the job went on. Just like my job, if someone quites or gets fired or dies the job is still there. life goes on without them. Well anyway I love NYPD BLUE and have since the day it started. I will be very unhappy to see it go. Thank God for video.
