I noticed this Valentine's Day that it has started to become extinct as dinosaurs and I haven't known why this traditional holiday has gone extinct now. Is it because the stores sell all the Valentine's Day merchandise really fast to make room for Easter merchandise or is it to attract sales to the stores to make more money and a huge profit? Because when I went shopping today I saw very few Valentine's Day sales and every store from Macy's to Sears did little promotion on Valentine's Day and even Victoria's Secret {The king of Valentine's Day sales} had no Valentine's Day sales and it shocked me that Victoria's Secret had no sales on Valentine's Day and they should've done a whole lot better this year. And it seems that this year the only stores that actually promoted Valentine's Day are jewelry stores like Zales and Kay Jewelers. Is this because jewelry stores have big sales around Valentine's Day when jewelry is the big gift of Valentine's Day? And another thing that is shocking is that there were very few commercials advertising Valentine's Day sales and the only store that seemed to have the big Valentine's Day sales is Kmart and it seems to me that Kmart was the choice store to buy Valentine's Day gifts. I can remember when Valentine's Day was a big giant affair and the stores would sell a lot of cards and the stores would have loads of candy for children to take to schools for Valentine's Day parties. But I think this year people waited until the last minute to buy Valentine's Day gifts and seeing few sales was shocking to me,

Do you think Valentine's Day has gotten underrated today?,

I wasn't really looking too much at sales, being single at the moment, but a lot of the shops in my area have been running the Valentine's Day and Easter merch together. There were heaps of people on the street corners selling roses, the Hot Dollar near work was selling toy handcuffs, whips and frilly red facemasks (I'm not joking there) and a heap of the restaurants were offering set Valentine's Day menus.

Then again, it's never been celebrated too much here in Aus. Typically people in relationships might do something special for each other, but for everyone else it has always been a bit of a non-event.

I for one hope it finally dies, and I wouldn't mind if it died a horribly painful death as well. As I've stated in a past blog or two, I've always hated the day. It was created for the sole benefit of greeting card and candy companies, and florists. You've also pointed out that jewelry stores also rake in the dough from this horrible day. Until it's banished completely from the annals of history, I shall continue to call for an ANTI-Valentines' Day as well, or better yet, a Single Person's Day, where all the people who feel they need someone else in their lives to make them whole and complete are as inferior as Valentine's Day makes us single people feel. Also, there is a reason the day has the initials it does... think about it. It probably sees the most diseases exchanged on that day than any other. Again, I say, ELIMINATE it with EXTREME prejudice. It wouldn't be missed at all. (Except by those same companies already mentioned above)

There will always be people who want to feel smug about these sorts of things they have that others don't and feel obliged to rub it in everyone's faces. Like some women who, when referred to with a generic Ms, will instantly bellow "Call me Mrs! I'm married, I've earned the title!" or the people with those stupid My Family stickers on their cars.

What about people like me who insist on being called "Mrs." (I remember when "Ms" started to come into vogue)but would love to see V-day die a horrible death?

Be polite about it and I'll happily call you or any other married woman "Mrs", but throwing in attitude ("I've earned it!") will often make me insist on the woman in question putting the various qualifications I've earned after my own name. It's only fair, after all.
