Oliver Reed was one of the most dynamic actors England ever produced. His broody good looks, charismatic charm and undeniable acting ability swiftly brought him to the attention of notable film directors Michael Winner and Ken Russell. His sense of menace often had him cast in the bad guy roles - he played a terrifyingly brutish Bill Sykes in Sir Carol Reed's (his Uncle) magnificent production of Lionel Bart's Oliver!.
Oliver's most notable performances came in Sitting Target, Paranoic, The Devils, Women in Love, and I'll Never Forget What's 'is Name. He revelled in his swashbuckling roles too and made the character of "Athos" very much his own in the popular comedy action adventures of the 3 and 4 Muskateers. Ken Russell pushed Oliver in at the deep end when he gave him the all singing role of Frank Hobbs in The Who's rock opera Tommy, but he still came out on top!
Sadly in his later years his off screen antics, usually aggravated by alcohol and blown out of proportion by the press, overshadowed his impeccable and incredible talent.
