Adaptation of classic Dickens novel, written by Alan Bleasdale. Produced for ITV with the Exxon Mobil Masterpiece Theatre and first shown in 1999. Originally aired as long serial but was later re-edited for shorter run. Stars Sam Smith as the title character, alongside a very strong cast of veteran actors such as Robert Lindsay and Julie Walters and some gifted newcomers.

The first run of the 1999 series was very good and is, I am told, largely untouched on the DVD. However, the re-edited version that was aired some time later was weakened significantly by the attempts to fit it into a shorter time slot. Beware. ...Continue »
