Oliver Nugent (Mickey Rooney) moves in with his college-aged grandson, Adam Shields (Dana Carvey), and his roomate Jonathan Burns (Nathan Lane). Adam also had a girlfriend, Jane (Meg Ryan). Oliver starts off taking care of their apartment and the boys, but soon the boys are counselling Oliver on life including his foray into going to college himself.
