Paul developed his tumbling, unicycle riding, and juggling skills from circus training classes at WAAPA.

Paul met and became friends with Wiggles founder Anthony Field when Anthony rented out a spare apartment room to Paul’s girlfriend and cast mate back when he was acting in West Side Story. In 1993, Paul helped Anthony Field with various Wiggles stage roles when Anthony had an operation and was out for five weeks. He played the Blue Wiggle, Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, and Wags the Dog. He was later offered the Captain’s part.

Paul and Hugh Jackman were students at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), located in Perth. Paul joined a year before Hugh, and they both auditioned for the role of Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, of which Hugh won.
