I'll be honest, the majority of what I know about Alan comes from his work on MASH and his book, "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed". Alan is quick witted and has a charisma that just overflows with oneriness.

But with his background with his actor father and mentally ill mother...Alan gained the ability to read ppl and a situation quite quickly abd clearly.

He also has a keen interest in how the world works and continues doing shows on science or supporting work on the sciences.

I may not share all of his liberal political views but I can respect him for keeping an open mind.

I don't know how this guy ever got a gig on television. Okay, he was funny in the beginning but his delivery was alawys the same. I now it was part of the charachter but his role hardly grew with him in it during the entire run of Mash. If you compare him to the great Carroll O'Connoor in "All in the family" (on around the same time, Archie Bunker's role changed quite a lot over the course of the series. I searched and searched for some glimpse of Hawkeye's insight into his own character and ther was nothing. The crowning insult was the final episode. Confusing a chicken for a child? What the devil were the writers thinking? I saw Alda in one seriously good movie called "Kill me if you can" a brilliant expose of the stupidity of the U.S. so called justice system. It was overplayed (as usual) but the performance demanded that kind of approach. That movie that he did with Ellen Burstyn "Sme time next year" was okay but still left me wanting more (except for the song which was perfect - Jane Olivor and Johnnie Mathis singing "The last time I felt like this") and don't get me started on "The seduction of Joe Tynan" - plain awful. I'll give you this, he might be okay as a director and I have enjoyed him lately on 30 Rock. As a "everyman" kind of actor he doesn't even come close to the greats like Jimmy Stewart. I give Alda a five out of ten and I should tell you, I'm feeling generous.
  • One of the all time greats!

Alan Alda is one of the all-time greats. As we know him as Hawkeye Pierce from MASH. As he was the star and producer of the show as the show revolved around him. And that if he left MASH earlier, then there wouldn't be a MASH. No MASH means no Alan Alda and vice versa. Sure he has done great things and great work. Both post and pre-MASH. But I think that when he is long gone, MASH will still be around. As I think that Alda is a legend that will forever be linked to the show that made him a household name. Liked him also in a short role in ER!
  • Alan Alda is the best actor I've ever seen.

When I first seen Alan Alda, I was watching TV with my dad and he had it on the show, M*A*S*H. Alan Alda played Hawkeye Pierce and he is just absolutely amazing. I've never seen a person so into there character like Alan Alda. He is just a terrific actor and he is definitely one of the all time greats. If I had to pick between some of my favorite actors and Alan Alda, it would definitely be Alan Alda because I've seen nobody act like he does. He is just absolutely great. :) I've seen him in educational films that I've seen in school where he went to the Gallapago Islands and talked about the many birds and animals there. I recently seen him in the movie, The Aviator and he was just brilliant. He will definitely get more great roles in the future and I wish him the best.
  • i started to watch Alan Alda on M*A*S*H and absolutley love Hawkeye

i started to watch Alan Alda on M*A*S*H and absolutley love Hawkeye

i noticed in the first season of ER he played a doctor for about five episodes..... i was soooo excited when i saw it!

when i see him much older than he was in M*A*S*H it makes me sad to think of that great show and the way it ended...i didn't like the ending much...even though it was amazing too!

he was great in the west wing too another great role he played

when Alan dies i will be devastated......the wolrd will loose an amazing man and actor!....but until then...Alan Aldan in my hero~!!!!!!!

    -Morgan.................(love Hawk)
  • Pure talent, Outstanding, an incredible actor and director. I don't think that if there was a different person to play Hawkeye Pierce on M*A*S*H that it would have been the hit it was...

Alan alda Is a genius, not to mention a good director also, winning several awards. Funny, and smart.. He has so many good quotes and sarcastic remarks, a good sense of humor and that makes him the actor he is. But he isn\'t all laughs and humor, he is also very capable of showing emotion, sadness, depression. He\'s been in numerous shows, most of them concerning goverment. He\'s been 3 different Senators in roles. I guess he likes being one, He is definatly one of my favorite actors. I started watching M*A*S*H recently and I\'ve seen probably 95% of all the episodes, and I hope to get the entire series. He is great in West wing and he probably would be good in any show. I would like to see him play a real Villain for once. I would try watching anything he is in. Because I know it would be good, unless it\'s not and in that case I wouldn\'t watch it because I would know it isn\'t good.
  • This man is a genius; I haven’t seen a roll that he could not play.

Alan Alda was absolutely perfect in M*A*S*H; that was a fantastic show. Although, I did not watch this show while it was running, I do own all 11 seasons on DVD. Alda is a very gifted actor and he has an enormous potential for comedy. In the show M*A*S*H, Alda was able to become Hawkeye Pierce; from the way he slouched when he walked to the way he would comb his jet-black hair back with his fingers. This man could make me cry with one of his speeches; the tone in his voice is powerful. Alan captured my heart again when he played in What A Woman Wants. I remember being so excited when this movie came out because it had two of my favorite actors, Alan Alda and Helen Hunt. I was a little disappointed that he did not play a bigger roll in this film, but he was still amazing. I would love to see Alan staring in another show, preferable comedy!

  • Alan Alda is wonderful in all his roles. He has the power to move the audience with his acting but his creative genius as a writer and director is where it is at.

I have loved Alan Alda since MASH but his life has been full of far more than this series. He not only was the star but a highly under rated director. He led a cast into artistic masterpieces. He had a sense of creativity that is unparralleled. His addition to the Television Show ER is also amazingly great as he plays another doctor that has more human interests than money or politics. That is the great thing about Alan Alda. He shows more focus on humanity and people. He does not seem to care about political agendas. But if you really focus on his works there is an agenda. He brings a face to war, disease, hardship, and many other situations that people face constantly. The moral lessons that he trys to convey are those of love thy fellow man. His writings in MASH reflect this the most when his ideas were more openly expressed. Being offered many jobs in the past he has not fallen bellow a standard that he sets for himself. Refusing to glorify war and choosing his roles makes him not only a great actor but a great influencial person on the people exposed to his works.
