While in college, she was told by a play director she could make it in New York as a singer. She moved the New York City the next month in order to do just that.

In 1995, Amy made her Broadway debut in Sunset Boulevard as Mary. Amy met her future husband, Michael C. Hall, while playing the roles of Mark's Mom and Maureen in the first national tour of RENT from 1996 to 1997. In 1998, she preformed as Roxie Hart in the national tour of Chicago, later playing the role on Broadway. In 1999, she played Lois Lane and Bianca in the Broadway revival of Kiss Me, Kate. In 2001, Amy made her Off-Broadway debut in tick . . . tick . . . BOOM!. In May, 2002, Amy married Michael C. Hall. She played Hope Cladwell in Urinetown on Broadway from 2003 to 2004. In 2005, Amy filmed the movie Reefer Madness, her vocals can be heard on the soundtrack. In April, 2006, Amy opened the Broadway musical The Wedding Singer in the role of Holly. Amy originally did a backbend in the musical number "Saturday Night in the City." During her second performance, she did the backbend and her wig fell off. She completed the number, awkwardly holding the wig to the back of her head. She cites this as one of her most embarrassing moments. She played the role of Holly until the shows closing on December 31, 2006.

On August 27, 2006 Amy participated in the benefit concert "Songs for Soraya" along with several other past and present RENT cast members. Amy and Michael C. Hall divorced in 2006. She married actor Brian Shepard in Sept 2011.
