Anne Lee
An expatriate Brit in Hollywood renowned for her patriotism - she raised the Union Flag daily outside her house and dressed as Britannia on St. George's Day - Anna Lee went to America at the end of the 30s after making a small mark in British films such as the 1937 version of "King Solomon's Mines". She never had an equivalent success in California, but got plenty of work all the same. Although she once described herself as "an old-fashioned Winston Churchill Conservative", she got into trouble in the days of Senator McCarthy and found herself, if not actually blacklisted, at leastMore "greylisted"; the work might have dried up if it hadn't been for her friendship with the legendary director John Ford, who had cast her in "How Green Was My Valley" in 1941 and kept on finding roles for her right up to his last movie. Her several husbands included the director Robert Stevenson ("Mary Poppins") and she was working in a TV soap virtually up to her death, when she was past 90.
