During the eighth and ninth seasons of The X-Files, Gish and fellow newcomer Robert Patrick were designed to be the replacements once Duchovny and Gillian Anderson left. While fans now agree that their performances were good, the primary reason for many fans watching the show had been the interaction between Duchovny and Anderson's characters Mulder and Scully, and the ratings continued to drop.

Annabeth, a native of New Mexico, first gained the attention of critics and moviegoers at the age of 13 when, according to film critic Roger Ebert, she delivered a performance "of stunning power" in the feature film Desert Bloom. She went on to star in the acclaimed feature film Mystic Pizza with Julia Roberts before taking a four year break from her career to attend Duke University and graduate cum laude with a degree in English.
