Anoop Desai started his own a capella group called Chiefs of Staff when he was at East Chapel Hill High School.
Anoop Desai went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a double major in political science and American studies with a focus on southern studies. In fall 2008, he began his graduate studies in folklore.
Anoops Desai went to East Chapel Hill High School. While he was there, he performed in Oliver!, The Wiz and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At East Chapel Hill, Desai was also involved in student government and the environmental club.

Anoop Desai was a member of the Clef Hangers, which is the oldest male Capella group at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was inducted in the group in his freshman year and became the president during his senior year.
Anoop Desai: Simon said that I looked a little bit geeky and, you know, that's fine. The way that I was dressed is the way that I dress when I go to class. It's preppy, it's how people at southern universities dress. But, you know, I recognize that Simon is not from a southern university and perhaps I might have to change it up a little bit while still keeping true to myself.
Anoop Desai: (about the stress of American Idol) It's hard, but it's important to keep your wits about you the entire time. I'm sort of a laid-back person, so I don't usually get worked up – unless it's a Carolina basketball game. But I was able to be in my own little world when I needed to be.
