The members of Athlete have been friends since the age of fourteen. Taking influences from The Flamming Lips and Grandaddy, they started jamming in a local pub called "The Bear". They began their recordings there before sending demos out.
The band signed with Regal Recordings and released their debut E.P. "Athlete" in march 2002. The bands claim to fame came in April 2003 with the release of their debut album "Vehicles and Animals" which featured the popular "You Got the Style". The album sold over 250,000 copies and got a Mercury Music Prize nomination.

"Tourist", the bands second album, was released end of January 2005 and reached number one in the UK album charts in it's first week. This was due to the success of the first single from the album, "Wires", which won them the Ivor Novello Award for "Best Contempory Song" in 2006.
On the bands official site the bassist Carey Willets has posted that the band has begun work on their third album, which is intended to be finished sometime in 2007.
