Bai Ling, a Chinese actress, was born in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China on October 10, 1966, during the Cultural Revolution, a very harsh time for the People's Republic of China. Her father, Bai Yuxiang, was a music teacher and musician, and her mother, Chen Binbin, was a literature teacher. Her younger brother, Bai Chen, works for an American company. Her older sister, Bai Jie, works for a tax bureau in China. At age 14, Bai enlisted in the People's Liberation Army as an artist soldier where she entertained soldiers in Tibet with a theater group. In 1989, she was a part of the pro-Democracy protests at Tiananmen Square. As a result, Bai left China and moved to America. When she was 21, she enrolled at the New York University's Department of Film and the Strasberg Institute. She became a United States citizen in 1999. She has appeared in many movies and plays during her career.
