Barnard Hughes is one of those actors who had a low-key career until he reached middle age. People knew his face, but not his name. Hughes then won the Tony Award in 1978 for the title role in Da, and the stage would become the launching pad of a long running career. He would go on to have recurring rolls in the more popular daytime soaps, like Guiding Light and As the World Turns. He became everyone’s father in movies like The Hospital, and Where’s Poppa. On the small screen he a recurring roles as Herb Hartley, the father in The Bob Newhart Show. He had his own show produced by MTM Productions called Doc. Doc was a light-hearted comedy that was in the middle of the CBS-MTM powerhouse Saturday night line-up. In the second season of Doc, the network killed of the rest of the cast, and moved the show to the ghetto. It didn’t help. Barnard Hughes has been married since 1950 to stage actress Helen Stenborg.
