    • Bernard was part of a campaign launched in 2008 to encourage the making of more children's programming in the UK. It was launched by the Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television.

    • Bernard holds the record for maximum number of appearances in children's story-telling series Jackanory, with 111.

    • One of his roles as Assistant Stage Manager in Repertory Theatre involved him finding a goat and bringing to the theatre on a bus.

    • Bernard was famous in the 1970s for narrating the children's road safety videos starring Tufty.

    • Bernard is a keen sport shooter, including clay pigeon, and in July 2008, attended the Game Fair, a charitable event at Blenheim Palace.

    • Bernard contributed a Doodle to the National Doodle Campaign (2008), which auctions off celebrity doodles for charity (The Neurofibromatosis Association).
