Bradley James: (About obsessed fans) There's some pretty intense people out there. I get a weird selection of gifts but it's very kind of people to send you gifts and say: well done. It's very flattering.
Bradley James: I just started on Twitter because someone was pretending to be me, which was really annoying. The worst thing about it was that during the [football] World Cup, they predicted that Uruguay were going to win, which was ridiculous! I was like: Right, that's it, I'm getting on Twitter. Having people think that my football judgement was so poor was offensive and so I had to put the record straight. I'm now @bradleyjames on Twitter. We'll see how long that lasts before the vast amount of crazy messages I receive scares me away.
Bradley James: (About the parts he'd choose to perform on stage) In typical actor fashion there's a number of Shakespeare parts that people have written down in their mind. Straight away I think Mercutio, love to give that a go and Richard III at some stage but you know, I'll have to get a few years behind me but Richard III will be a lot of fun to play. There's numerous roles which I've seen people perform and been very jealous of and: 'I wanna do that, get off the stage, give me the part'. So hopefully in years to come I'll get the opportunity to do that.
Bradley James: (About his earlies memory from the theathre) My earliest memory from the theatre was going to see a pantomime in Bath and Aladdin said something like: 'Oh, what's in that cave?' or something and: 'I'm a bit scared. I don't want to go in.' And the audience was really quiet. And a little voice that belonged to a four year old went: 'I'll go in there!' And everyone turned round to the little voice and my parents suddenly looked down to see me, jumping up and down: 'I'll go in there!' And I shouted out loud at a pantomime. And I'd honestly been that sort of engrossed in the performance in the world that they'd created that I felt the need to rescue Aladdin from his peril and help him out by going in the dark cave.
Bradley James: (About performing on stage) The idea of the audience and the cast sort of giving that energy back and forth makes it a very interactive experience because you can't really do that when you're watching something on screen because the performance's already been given, the energy levels have been set and it won't alter with regards to how the audience feels about it. When you're here, the atmosphere that theatre creates is all around you it's just something... I'd like to avoid using the word magical but I think it's kind of a very good word for it. I can't think of... there's a mystery to it and... nah just go with it. Magical.
(A Night Less Ordinary Interview - Tricycle Theatre, London. November 5, 2009)
Bradley James: (About having being voted 'Hottie of the Week' by MTV watchers) It has very little effect on my life, it was very flattering. I look like my Mum so I said: 'Mum, there you go, the gene pool is top trumps'.
Bradley James: (About his mother) My mum plays her cards very close to her chest, but she hasn't been able to do that very well with this show. Every time I get home, she'll go: 'Do you have the next episode for me yet?' So I guess there are a few signs of pride there. (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About the most challenging scene in Merlin season 2) The most important scene for Arthur in this series is a brief encounter that involves his mother, who's dead. I have a very strong relationship with my mother, she's been both my parents at once for years, and she's been an inspiration. (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About starring on a prime time Saturday night show) I went out with some of my friends recently, with a lad we don't normally spend so much time with, and the novelty was still there for him. There was a girl looking over, going: 'There's that guy from Robin Hood,' which I get sometimes. My friend who hadn't witnessed much of this before got a little bit too excited – 'That girl has spotted you!' – and I realised that was step one, and most of my friends have moved on from that and are very blasé about the whole thing, which they should be. I haven't changed. (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About Internet popularity) A popular question for lots of actors is: 'Do you Google yourself?' When the show started, I had a look at some of the things that were out there, and I quickly realised that it was a bad idea, so I've since been avoiding the Internet like the plague. People say some very kind things, like: 'You're a great actor,' for example. But these are people who have gone out of their way to write something about you, so they're extreme views! (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About feeling homesick when filming in France for Merlin) The longest we've done in France is six weeks, and I'll admit the novelty wears off after a while. I just want to go home and I personally miss vegetables and milk, as they don't seem to have them in France, it's all meat, wine, cheese and bread. I drink a lot of milk, and they don't do decent milk in France, it's all powdered rubbish. Five weeks without milk and I'm on edge! (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About filming in France for Merlin) It's a perk to go and experience another culture, albeit the one next door. It's a very nice aspect of the job that you get to travel to France three times a year and spend some time out there. They look after us very well. And then we have the castle itself [Pierrefonds], which is the main event. When we all first saw it, we were amazed by it. It creates the world for you so well that it almost makes you become a bit lazy, because you don't have to do that imaginary work in a studio… it's all there for you. (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About his role of Arthur in Merlin) Generic nice guys bore me to tears! I don't see why anybody would want to see just people being nice. Arthur has so many flaws that he has to go through a series of lessons to become the man that we know he's going to become. It's still a learning game for Arthur at the moment, before he becomes the man of legend. I love the fact that audiences are about to go on that journey with me. (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About the Arthurian legend and how it's reflected in Merlin) I'd seen various films over the years. You kind of grow up aware of the legend, but I don't think there's been a definitive telling of the story. I think we're providing a bit of Saturday night escapism, so it's a different angle. I don't think we're telling a definitive tale either. We've just come in and just kiboshed a lot of the ideas and mixed it up a bit! (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (About getting his role of Arthur in Merlin) As an actor, when you go for auditions, there are certain roles that come along and you think, I really want that one, and Prince Arthur was definitely one of those. I remember the last audition I did was this workshop where they had lots of Arthurs there, and me looking at each one thinking they weren't right for the part, because they weren't me! (OK magazine, Sept 15, 2009)
Bradley James: (about Arthur and Merlin's relationship) They fall out straight away when Merlin doesn't take too kindly to the way Arthur is treating a servant. Arthur tends to use brute force and ignorance to get what he wants. His privileged upbringing has an effect on his personality. When you grow up with people deferring to you it has an impact on the way you behave. But Merlin is a catalyst for a change in his behaviour. He sees in Merlin a lot more than he judges at first and it helps him realise the kind of man he could become.
Bradley James: (about why he was casted for the role of Arthur in Merlin) The workload has been very intense. The sword work was the thing I enjoyed the most. They were the most fun sequences. I think that's why they hired me. I look like I can run fast and swing a sword around with conviction. On the first day I found myself holding a sword with Will Mellor charging at me like a maniac. It was like being thrown in at the deep end.
Bradley James: (about Merlin's approach on the role of Arthur) No one is going to like him to begin with. It's a long journey for him to make to become the Arthur that is so familiar to us. Arthur's troubled past has made him a proud and emotionally repressed young man. He is a teenager encroaching on adulthood. He's grown up without a mother and he's never had an outlet for his emotions so he is keeping a lot within himself. He will be King one day. So he would not dare allow his friends to see a weaker side. He's expected to be a pillar of strength. There's a stubbornness that comes with that and as a result he is not able to sympathise with other people.
Bradley James: (about working with Anthony Head) I saw him and my jaw dropped and I said something like, 'what the hell is he doing here?' And they said, 'oh, he's playing your father,' and at that point I was just like, wow. That is pretty ridiculous. And I went over to him and said, 'if I mess up a lot a lot of the words I'm supposed to say in the first few conversations, I'm a Buffy fan. But keep that quiet. (Laughs) So yeah, I was quite pleased to see him there on the first day. And it's been terrific working with him.
Bradley James: (about his role of Arthur) I actually feel quite guilty cause I am sort of the one who gets to have all the fun. Colin sort gets to stand there, hold his hand out and go 'wooo'. I got a sword and get totally play around with it all day.
Bradley James: (about the first time he met Colin Morgan) When I first met Colin I... I couldn't understand what he was saying. It was purely because I wasn't used to his accent and, and also he's got this very... you wouldn't think when you look at him, this very dark sense of humor you don't know about it.
Bradley James: (about working on Merlin) I thought it would be a lot of fun and I haven't been disappointed, particularly the swordfights. It's like when you were a kid, with a plastic sword, pretending to be a "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle." It's a dream.
Bradley James: I'm quite simple with my food taste. If I was going to a restaurant, I'd probably order steak with some vegetables. And... you know? Keep it simple.
Bradley James: (about shooting stuff that will be filled in with CGI) It's not scary at all being chased by well... well, it's a little... amusing being chased by ping pong balls. Anyway, erm... so you kinda have to have quite an active imagination, you know? Just to throw yourself out there mentally.
Bradley James: (about the public's reaction to Merlin) From what I've been witness to, everyone seems to be very positive about it. Nobody hesitates about saying how much they're enjoying it, so I think it's going quite well. But there's still the rest of the series to go, so it could all go wrong!
Bradley James: (about the possibility of a second series for Merlin) I think things look very positive. We seem to be getting fans and as long as there's that demand to produce the show, I hope it will work out. I personally would love to do it, given a rest first!
Bradley James: I managed to pick up a bruise most days. I still have a couple of scratches on my arm from Will Mellor. It makes you feel like you are a big warrior hero suffering for his art.
Bradley James: (about attending London's MCM Expo) I was surprised so many people were there to see us.
Bradley James: (about learning to use a sword) I learned on the job from the brilliant stunt director Andreas Petrides. He was fantastic. He made the whole thing quite easy.
Bradley James: (about his character of Arthur on Merlin) One of the appeals of playing him is that he is not really perfect. He is not a noble figure to begin with. He is not a so-called hero, and he is not good for the sake of being good. There are flaws to him.
