    Actor Bruce Dern in his earlier pre-star years regularly played redneck, backwoods hillbillies who were always in trouble with the law. It was fun to watch Dern go up against Marshal Dillon (James Arness) in Gunsmoke or fight the whole Cartwright family in Bonanza. Dern is the only actor ever allowed to fatally shoot John Wayne in the film The Cowboys (1972). Dern, descended from a wealthy and politically active family seemed to relish playing characters the opposite of his own background.
