In 2000, Cameron won two SDFCS Awards at the San Diego Film Critics Society Awards for his 2000 film Almost Famous, one for Best Director and the other for Best Screenplay, Original.

In the Fall of 1979, Cameron (then 22) went undercover at Ridgemont Senior High in Rendondo Beach, California to research his book on teen life, Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
