Charles Collingwood started out in broadcast journalism as a protege of Edward R. Murrow known then as "one of Murrow's Boys". A distinguished reporter, his eloquent on-air journalism led to his becoming a chief correspondent and host of CBS's Eyewitness to History series. When Edward R. Murrow left Person to Person series, Charles Collingwood took over the hosting in 1958 until the show ended in 1961. It was Charles Collingwood that was called in to replace the devastated Walter Cronkite after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He was married to actress Louise Allbritton until her death in 1979.
