Charles Lane, a prolific character actor, sold insurance for a living until his friend, actor Irving Pichel, urged him to try acting. The two friends moved to the Los Angeles area and joined the Pasadena Playhouse. In the 1930s Lane began to take on small roles in movies. His long career included countless roles in movies and television. Lane's last on-camera role was in a TV movie in 1995, when he was 90 years old. Charles Lane passed away in 2007, at the age of 102, with his son Tom by his side.

    Charles Lane 1905 - 2007 Character actor Charles Lane died at the age of 102. Mr. Lane, whose career spanned more than 60 years, was best known for playing a crotchety old man. He appeared in movies like It's a Wonderful Life, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Twentieth Century. On television he had a recurring role as the scheming railroad man, Homer Bedloe, on the sitcom Petticoat Junction. He also appeared in episodes of Perry Mason, The Twilight Zone, The Munsters and I Love Lucy. It is also noteworthy that Mr. Lane was a founding member of the Screen Actors Guild.

    Lane continued to act into his 90s. Two years ago, the TV Land Awards paid tribute to Mr. Lane by celebrating his 100th birthday. After the audience sang Happy Birthday, Lane was presented with his award and then announced, "If you're interested, I'm still available!"
