While the teacher lectured, I was on the deck of a pirate ship or with Custer at the Little Bighorn... I had a very vivid imagination. I read very heavily from the time I was six. I would take six books home from the library on Saturday and bring them back the next week. I remember when I was eight or nine, I turned in a book report on Gone With the Wind and the teacher didn't believe that I could have read that book. She had to call my mother to find out if I really had."
He attended Pasadena City College before joining the Air Force during the Korean War. He served as an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer for the Military Air Transport Service.
