Clive Cussler grew up in Alhambra, California. His mother was a homemaker and his father was a German-born accountant
About his childhood, he recalls the following: "I would sit in algebra .. and stare out the window. While the teacher lectured, I was on the deck of a pirate ship or with Custer at the Little Bighorn... I had a very vivid imagination. I read very heavily from the time I was six. I would take six books home from the library on Saturday and bring them back the next week. I remember when I was eight or nine, I turned in a book report on Gone With the Wind and the teacher didn't believe that I could have read that book. She had to call my mother to find out if I really had."
He attended Pasadena City College before joining the Air Force during the Korean War. He served as an aircraft mechanic and flight engineer for the Military Air Transport Service.
In the 60's He went on to a successful advertising career at the D'Arcy advertising agency, winning many national honours for his copywriting -- the most relevant one in the Cannes Film Festival. He begun in the business as a copywriter, but later on he became creative director.
Now a full time bestselling author, he has explored the deserts of the American South-West in search of lost gold-mines, dived in isolated lakes in the Rocky Mountains looking for missing aircraft and hunted under the sea for shipwrecks of historic significance, discovering and identifying more than sixty. The most famous being the Hunley, the first submarine to sink a warship. Like his famous hero Dirk Pitt , he is an avid enthusiast of c cars.
Clive Cussler divides his time between Denver, Colorado and Paradise Valley, Arizona.
He was married to Barbara Knight for 48 years, since 1955 until her death in 2003, and they have three children and two grandchildren.
He is the founder and chairman of NUMA (National Underwater & Marine Agency), a non-profit group. Also, he is a member of the Explorers Club , the Royal Geographic Society, and the American Society of Oceanographers.
