Each blank space represents a zero and each non-blank space represents a one. The first column reads 10111 (X), the middle column (&), and the last column 10101 (Y), coming out as X&Y. The colors are there because they're pretty.
Edit: There was actually an error when the cover went to print, and instead of 'X&Y', the code actually reads 'X96'.
