Mr. Wilde was of Czech-Hungarian decent. He spent most of his childhood in Europe. He turned town a scholarship in the medical field because of his love for acting in the theater. He was a champion fencer with the U.S. Olympic fencing team but quit before the 1936 Olympics in Berlin to take an acting part in the theatre.He was discovered by Hollywood for his work in a Broadway hit called "Having a Wonderful Time, but he didn't become known until he worked as a fencing choreographer and actor (Tybalt) in Laurence Olivier's 1940 Broadway production of "Romeo and Juliet". He started producing,and directing.I had the privilege of meting him in 1980 in his Sunset Boulevard office in Hollywood. He died of leukemia three days after his 74th birthday.
Mr. Wilde married actress Jean Wallace 1951-1981 (Divorced)and secondly married actress Patricia Knight 1939-1951 (Divorced), Daughter Wendy born 1943 and son Cornel Wilde Jr.
