Alvin tries to stop the execution of Taliek Allen because of new evidence that Alvin's client suffered brain damage when he was attacked. Alvin asks Nick for help and tries to get the execution stopped.
Lulu decides to have full custody of the baby and give the baby her last name not Nick's. She also steps down as head of Legal Services in Pittsburgh to work reduced hours and spend more time with the baby.
Alvin is angry because of what Nick told his client regarding his chances for a clemency hearing.
Nick learns that Burton has stepped down from his firm to be a grandfather to the baby. Nick also leaves his job at the firm of Walter and McNeil.
Nick and Lulu split up, but he promises to be there for the baby. Lulu names the baby 'Ann' after Nick's mother.
Because of his illness, Alvin quits. He says he's going to go to Antartica , but is that his real intention?
Nick steps in to for Alvin at an important 'State funding' meeting. He's decided to take up Alvin's earlier offer and become Lulu's replacement.
