After an adventurous (and far from monastic) youth, Brother Cadfael has settled down to the quiet religious life as herbalist at Shrewsbury Abbey before dramatic events bring him to the fore. King Stephen captures a nearby castle after a long siege and gives orders for the ninety-four rebels who had resisted him to be hanged. Monks of Shrewsbury help with the burial arrangements, but in counting the bodies Cadfael finds they have one too many to deal with, concluding that the extra man was murdered. The king grants Cadfael permission to investigate, but allows him only four days to solve the crime. What he finds is a tale of missing treasure centring on the daughter of Godith, the castle's owner, and a local man called Hugh Beringar. moreless
