Definitely one of the more recognized faces in wrestling. An incredibly gifted athlete, Davey Boy Smith, was a household name. He and Bret Hart had very memorable matches.
The tag team known as the British Bulldogs is one of the most recognized and best tag teams there ever was. Davey Boy had a lot of things wrestlers that are overrated don't have: Charisma, great work ethic, a great background and just a love for the business even when they are handed crap to them.
Davey wrestled in the Calgary Stampede for a while. He and tag team partner The Dynamite Kid were famous even back them. Only great things were waiting for them, so when the WWF came knocking it wasn't a surprise.
The Bulldogs won the tag titles in the WWF in Wrestlemania 2 then put over the Harts in 87 and never got another run. The Bulldogs jobbed and put over other tag teams like Demolition. Davey Boy and Dynamite broke up over a couple
of arguments. The Dynamite Kid showing great bitterness hates Davey Boy to this day perhaps mainly out of frustration for the fact that his career continued on a big scale while his didn't. Kid remains in a wheelchair paralyzed for the rest of his life. The Dynamite Kid and Davey were known to use drugs every now and then.
When Davey Boy returned to the WWF after a near three year absence, he was noticably bigger and obviously using steroids. Despite McMahon's claim to clean the WWF steroiods were prevalent. Davey won the IC Title, and at Wembley Stadium in 1992 had another great match with Bret Hart. Davey then spent a memorable period in WCW and even teamed up Sting for a time. Davey in WCW in 1993 was definitely one of the reasons to get interested in WCW during this time.
After WCW, he went back to the WWF again and teamed up with the legendary Owen Hart. After the WWF and the whole garbage with Montreal Screwjob he went to WCW. Unfortunately, WCW as well didn't take advantage of him. He went back to the WWF and feuded with people like the Rock. He put him over as well. Davey then exited out of the WWF. He had a nagging back injury and was very dependent on morphine.
Davey Boy passed away while still being very young and it sickens me how the WWF misused him at the end. It also sickened me how they sort of portrayed him at the end like a guy beaten off. It doesn't matter really this is expected from the WWE but everyone who reall knows anything about wrestling knows that Davey was a hard worker, great performer and a legend in his own right. It's not surprising to see and talk with people who appreciated his time in the ring to this day.moreless
