Donald: [On his battle with pneuminia] I was very ill, and it took me quite a few months to recuperate. The name of what I had always eludes me, but it was a fever. It just wouldn't go away, and I kept withering away until finally they got the correct combination of antibiotics, and I slowly started to get well. It took nine months for me to get back on my feet again.
Donald: My brothers and my mother were all dancers, outside of whatever else they did, like acrobatics, high-wire, trapeze. I was born in a circus.
Donald: I'm basically a hoofer, a tap dancer. I was always very good from the waist down, moving with the feet... I became what's known as a total dancer, using the entire body in order to express what you want to express in tap dancing and line.
Donald: I grew up in vaudeville. All the hoofers used to get together in a drugstore down the street from the theater, or what-have-you, and if they knew a new step they would teach it to you. I learned hoofing steps that way.
Donald: I didn't smoke. I didn't smoke then, and I don't smoke now. We worked every day - that keeps you in pretty good shape. We could go for a long time in one take. You had to be in good shape with Gene Kelly.
Donald: I can picture things, like a painter would, though I'm not good at painting, either.
Donald :I was born and raised to entertain other people. I've heard laughter and applause and known a lot of sorrow. Everything about me is based on show business - I think it will bring me happiness. I hope so.
Donald: I know what you're thinking, and the answer is yes. I can still leap over the furniture and dance on the wall. And recite 24 bars of that popular tongue twister 'Moses Supposes.'
Donald: It's not easy working with a genius - but Gene (Kelly) was very patient with me.
Donald: I'd like to thank the Academy for my lifetime achievement award that I will eventually get.
