John Black is my God. Now let me preface this a bit: I'm a well-educated man, with good taste (IMHO) and an eye and ear for the Arts. Is Drake Hogestyn the best actor ever to grace the Stage or Screen? Sadly, no. Is he the William Shatner of Daytime Television? Possibly. Is that a bad thing? Last I checked, Shatner just won another Emmy for Denny Crane in "Boston Legal". Should Drake? Every year.
I started watching Days in 1991 while in residence at university. While being a boy watching a soap may seem --insert homophobic remark here--, I was the only guy in a room with 20 girls ;) faithfully watching Days every day. Fourteen years later, there's only one reason why I still watch Days religiously: John Black. Drake is magnificent in the role, and such an amazing actor. Sure, it's over the top, but that's what we want. Effortless. Amazing. The man doesn't have to say anything in the scene, yet he commands it. I worship him.
Of all the people in the whole world I want to meet, Drake is Number One. Am I some crazy soap star stalker? Hardly. It's mainly because while I worship the character of John Black, Drake just seems like a regular, nice guy in real life. In every interview I've seen, or comments from fellow costars, Drake gives off a down-to-earth, humourous, and real persona. He deserves better than Days, yet he seems happy with his life and career, so you have to respect that. I'll buy you a beer anytime Drake.
