Biography:

Eli Wallach's acting career began in the 1930s, but was interrupted by World War II; after the war, he began to make his mark in New York in the theatre, and was very busy in television throughout the 1950s. It was as an interpreter of Tennessee Williams that he found fame, playing Kilroy in the original production of "Camino Real" and Mangiacavello in "The Rose Tattoo"; he made his film debut in 1956 in Williams's "Baby Doll". In the 1960s, such movies as "The Magnificent Seven", "The Misfits", "How The West Was Won", "The Victors", "The Moonspinners", "How To Steal A Million" and "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" made him a major name all round the world, although he continued to star on Broadway and to do TV work. A versatile actor who has portrayed many different nationalities, he is still working in his nineties in such films as "The Hoax" and "The Holiday"; he has been married for over 60 years to the actress Anne Jackson.
