I first heard Engelbert sing when I was 5 years old. My grandmother listened to him on her lps. I fell in love with this man then. The only celebrity/person I put above him would be John Wayne or my own Grandfather.
Having been a huge fan for many years in October of 2003, my grandmother and I attended one of his concerts in Pittsburgh, PA, about 2 hours from where we live. We sat in the audience waiting, the stage lights were flashing, and we heard the most incredibly sexy growl come over the audience.
Within moments Engelbert was there, on stage singing to us. It was almost as if he were singing to each individual.
My grandma was beside herself and I think she was near hyperventilating, and I wasn't far from it myself.
This man has an incridble persona. Whereas Tom Jones comes across sleazy and a dirty old man, Engelbert is classy beyond belief. The two hours went by way to fast but it was a night I will remember for the rest of my life.
Whether he's singing Please Release Me, It's Just to Good to Be True, After the Loving, Last Waltz, or any other of his numerous hits, his velvet voice will last for years and is ageless.moreless
