If there was anyone who can attest to the fact that dreams do come true in Hollywood, it would be Mumbai-born beauty Freida Pinto, who gained instant international fame after the success of her movie
Slumdog Millionaire in 2008. Ever since she was five, Freida had always wanted to act. Although there was never a clear intention of having acting as a profession, Pinto held on to her desire of someday becoming involved in acting. When she was 20 and going through her third year at St. Xavier's College in Mumbai, India, Freida took up a film and literature course, which bolstered her
… More aspiration of working in the entertainment business. With the loving support of her family, she began treading the path towards becoming an actress.
Initially, all she wanted was to make her way into the Indian film industry. She soon realized that thousands like her had the same goal of becoming a Bollywood star and that without the appropriate backing from someone in the business, that goal may never be achieved. Pinto changed her approach and in 2005, decided to take up modeling to gain her confidence and visibility. She signed with an Elite Model Managament office located in India and immediately landed print and television commercials for products like Wrigley's Chewing Gum, VISA, De Beers, eBay, and Škoda Auto. Freida also graced the covers and pages of various magazines such as Femina & Femina Girl and FNL. Apart from her work with MTV fashion shows and the History Channel, she was able to experience different cultures as she traveled to Fiji, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore as anchor of the travel-themed show, Full Circle.
In 2007, famed director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) came to India for the casting selection and the subsequent shooting of the Academy-award-winning and critically-acclaimed 2008 film Slumdog Millionaire. After six months of gruelling auditioning, Pinto beat out thousands of candidates from UK, US, and India and won the role of the adult Latika, the object of Jamal Malik's (Dev Patel) affection in the movie. Her portrayal of the slightly-submissive and supportive Mumbai girl earned her a BAFTA nomination, recognition from film audiences and critics alike, and a lead role in a Woody Allen film. Even after Pinto's sudden success, the humble girl from Mumbai has kept her head held high but her feet firmly set on the ground.
