Galen, unlike many of the other American Gladiators, does not make paid public appearances. He instead chooses only to do appearances that are non-paid for charitable organizations.
Galen received scholarship offers from 12 major colleges for both football and wrestling. He did not attend college, instead he moved to Alaska to work on a boat.
Galen was "hanging out" at a bodybuilding competition in Los Angeles in 1989 when a talent agent saw him and suggested that he try out for American Gladiators.
(On coaching a girls volleyball team)Galen: I would much rather deal with girls, and I don't think they sometimes get the respect they deserve. They are a lot tougher than people give them credit.
(After getting the job as Turbo)Galen: I was a weekend athlete, but I was running a concrete company. I quit it right then and pursued an acting career.
(On what he liked least about being an American Gladiator)Galen: I would get hundreds of letters in the mail from women proposing marriage. But they didn't even know me. They just knew a character.
(On his idol Muhammad Ali)Galen: He's a man who came along and did what nobody else could do at the time. Everybody talked about him having a big mouth. I see him as a man of confidence backing up every word he said!
(On becoming an American Gladiator)Galen: There's no other way to put it but that this was supposed to happen for me. It wasn't something I was looking for or aspiring to be. I'm from a real small town and never expected to leave there.
