In a show it's the actor's job to portray the character he playing. It's the writer's job to improve and grow the character on the show as time goes on.

In Voyager the Kim character suffered the same fate as Denise Crosby who played (Tasha Yar) the cast was so big her character surfed and was not improved like the others. Crosby offend had fights with the writers about how lame her character was. This is why she didn't renew her contract and left the show.

In many of the episodes with Kim when they tried to grow his character. Like the episode when he fell in love with a alien women against Janeway's orders, but at the end of the episode it's like they hit the reset button and it never happen and Kim when back to be an upstanding officer.

Garrett Wang character also suffered from politics of Hollywood. Jeri Ryan was also one of the Co-producers and creative consultants on the show did not make it easy for Garrett Wang.

It's said that Jeri Ryan and Garrett Wang did not get along and the show.

Watching season 1 of voyager, you can see painfully how cringe worthy wang's efforts of acting really are, although to be fair most of the time he was rather wooden. Is that a bit harsh? I don't think so because if you take an objective view of his early work on voyager you know that is the truth. Later seasons of the show he managed to improve, but he was never spectacular, he never stood out like say Robert Picardo did. You could say it was not his fault, that it was because of how extremely boring the Harry Kim character actually was, but at the end of the day it is the actors job to bring the character to life, and in my view Wang simply failed to do that. Whenever i watched voyager and realised it was a Kim episode, it was a real turn off, and indeed if you look on this very site, most of the kim themed episodes have sub par review scores. So the character sucked, because of lousy writing but also because Wang failed to do more to try and make Kim a better character. Rick Berman the producer of voyager did not like Wang for apparently being late turning up for filming, That is not the way to deal with a professional problem.

Garrett Wand isn't really know, but he has a lot of potential if he is given a chance. His acting on Star Trek Voyager was perfect for each episode and this is a proof of his talent.
