George Chandler was an American actor who is best known for playing the role of Uncle Petrie on the hit television series, Lassie. Born in 1898, the Illinois native began his television acting career in American Westerns. Most notably, Chandler made numerous guest appearances on the television show, The Adventures of Kit Carson from 1951-1955. In addition, the actor could be seen in a two-part episode of the anthology series, Frontier (1955). Chandler then turned his attention to Lassie where he was a lead character on the series from 1957-1964. During Chandler's tenure on the show, Lassie earned a 1960 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Children's Programming. In addition to filming Lassie, the actor also co-starred with Robert Sterling on the CBS comedy series, Ichabod and Me during the 1961-62 season. Chandler retired from acting after appearing in the Clint Eastwood film, Every Which Way But Loose (1978). The actor died in Panorama City, California in 1985 at the age of 86.
