Gaynes, credited under his real name (George Jongejans,) appeared in Italian and French operas before World War II, and American ones after the war. The latter included the role of Henry Higgins in 1964's "My Fair Lady."
Gaynes is arguably best remembered for his portrayal of Bob Baker in the original production of 1953's "Wonderful Town."
