In 1994 Giannini won a Nastro d'Argento for Best Male Dubber, when he dubbed Al Pacino in Carlito's way.

Giannini earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in 1976, for his role in Lina Wertmuller's Pasqualino Settebellezze.

Giannini has two sons: Lorenzo, born in 1967, and Adriano, born in 1971.
