Born in Deepwater, Missouri, Gladys became the church soloist at age 13. She got her start with the Chicago Opera and quickly moved to the New York Metropolitan Opera, where she sang for 16 years. She starred in five movies, wrote a best selling book "Come Soon Tomorrow" and was a well known star of radio. Her concerts across the country were well attended.
