Guy Gavriel Kay was born in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba. While studying at the University of Manitoba, he came in contact with Christopher Tolkien, and from that contact eventually became an assistant editor of J.R.R. Tolkien's unpublished works. He moved to Oxford University in 1974 to work on the editing of The Silmarillion, and returned to Canada in 1976 to complete his law degree at the University of Toronto. His first fantasy novel, The Summer Tree (book 1 of the Fionavar Tapestry) was published in 1984, and he continues to write fantasy novels set in fictional worlds that reflect real historical places and periods.
