Hugh was born in England to creative minds. His father, Jonathan, is a writer, as well as a philosophy teacher, and his mother, Sarah, is a publisher.
He attended several schools and successfully graduated. It was during this time which Hugh initially showed interest in acting through the school plays.
Hugh took a job as a bartender, before pursuing a career in theatre in the following Shakespeare written plays: "Measure for Measure", "Twelfth Night" and "Much Ado About Nothing".
His first television appearance was in "Trial and Retribution II" which lead to a role on the hugely popular UK series "Cold Feet".
These smaller roles lead Hugh into a starring role in the George Eliot classic "Daniel Deronda" series produced by the BBC.
From here Hugh moved into movie roles, and it was his performance as Prince Char in the movie "Ella Enchanted" which saw Hugh get International attention.
