Ivan Reitman, nicknamed Ivanco, is a producer and director, who has created many of American cinema's most successful and best loved feature film comedies and has worked with Hollywood's acting elite. Born in Czechoslovakia, but fled with his family at the age of four, to Canada. He attended Canada's McMaster University, where he produced and directed several television shorts.
He followed with a live television show, "Greed" with Dan Aykroyd as the announcer. Reitman produced "Spellbound" for the live stage, and evolved into the Broadway hit "The Magic Show" starring Doug
… More Henning. He worked on "The National Lampoon Show" and later returned to Broadway to produce and direct the musical "Merlin", where he earned a Tony nomination for directing.
Ivan Reitman, along with Tom Pollock are currently the heads of a television production company, The Montecito Picture Company.
Reitman has produced comedy hits such as "National Lampoon's Animal House", where he introduced John Belushi to the film business, and the family movies, "Beethoven" and "Beethoven's 2nd".
He has directed movies including "Meatballs", "Stripes" and "Ghostbusters", films starring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. Other directing credits include "Dave, " which starred Kevin Kline and Sigourney Weaver, and "Junior" which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny DeVito and Emma Thompson. Arnold Schwarzenegger also starred in Reitman's "Twins" where he used a different comedic persona and "Kindergarten Cop".
"The Late Shift", produced by Ivan Reitman, which was based on Bill Carter's non-fiction book about the late-night television wars, received seven Emmy nominations.
He was able to work on the film "Space Jam, " starring Michael Jordan and the Looney Tunes characters.
His television credits include the Emmy-nominated children's show "The Real Ghostbusters", the animated series "Beethoven" and now he is working on "Mummies".
In 1984, Reitman was honored as Director of the Year by the National Association of Theater Owners and he received a Special Achievement Award at the Canadian Genie awards in 1985. He was awarded again with the People's Choice Award, in 1979 and 1989 for "Animal House" and "Twins".
In November of 1994, Reitman became the third director honored by Variety magazine in a special Billion Dollar Director issue.
He currently lives in Slovakia with his wife, Genevičve Robert (married in 1976) and his 3 children (Ivan likes to add his children Jason, Catherine, and Caroline in his movies). He was inducted into the Walk of Fame on May 5, 1997 at 7024 Hollywood Blvd in 1997 while he was inducted into CANADA's Walk of Fame in 2001.
