Picking up the morning after, Castle and Beckett now have to decide if they're a couple or was it just a onetime deal. But before they can tackle that, they must deal with those responsible for Kate's mother's death who are now a threat to Beckett.

Sheriff Forbes delivers some unsettling news to Alaric and Elena about the murder weapon used in a recent killing. In Damon and Stefan's ongoing mission to kill Klaus, Stefan turns to Bonnie and Abby for help, and Damon seeks out to an old acquaintance to help him put together an elaborate plan. With a plan of his own, Klaus hosts an unusual dinner party, where he reveals another story from his family's violent history, but a surprise visitor brings the party to an abrupt end. Meanwhile, Caroline's heart is broken when she is unable to prevent a tragedy.

Bonnie believes her dreams she's been having about Klaus's coffins will help her figure out how he can be killed. The recurring dreams also lead Bonnie to a reunion with her mother, Abby, whom Bonnie hasn't seen for 15 years. When they visit Abby's farmhouse, Bonnie and Elena meet Jamie, a young man Abby took in years earlier. Though Bonnie's sudden appearance catches Abby off-guard, she does her best to explain the past. Tyler turns to an unexpected ally as he works to regain his free will. Damon is intrigued by Dr. Fell, and Klaus and Stefan continue their violent negotiations over control of the coffins containing Klaus's family members.

Klaus contacts Chicago witch Gloria to help him find the reasons why his plan isn't working as he expected. Gloria, though able to see glimpses of the puzzle, needs Stefan's help to piece it all together. Damon is pushed to his limits by a new enemy in Mystic Falls with far reaching effects. Even while helping Elena confront her feelings, Caroline tries to cope with her own emotions. Jeremy is left extremely confused after a dramatic and important discovery with one of his ghosts. But it's an unexpected meeting involving Bonnie that will touch everyone's lives.

While in Chicago with Klaus, Stefan runs into a vampire from his past, someone still interested in him after decades. In a flashback to 1920s Chicago, Stefan recalls a troubling chapter in his life. Following a tip, Damon and Elena follow the trail of Stefan and Klaus. Wondering what's happened to Caroline, Tyler asks Sheriff Forbes for help.

Klaus attempts to execute a plan that will give him even more power, but things don't go as he planned. Alaric and Damon hesitantly go along with Elena's search for Stefan, but her plan may end up putting Damon in danger. Jeremy asks for Matt's help to find out what his ghosts want from him, and Caroline needs Tyler's help.
