      Jack got his start as a western screenwriter as a ghostwriter on Gunsmoke for his Fresno State College buddy, Sam Peckinpah


      Sam Peckinpah named the sheriff in Gunsmoke after Jack's son Micah.


      Jack wrote his westerns at his "Apple Pie Ridge Ranch" in Big Sur, California, and commuted to L.A. from Monterey airport.
