James studied English and Modern Languages at Lady Margaret Hall, in North Oxford. At the 2007 Australian F1 GP, he revealed he is fluent in Italian, which helps during interviews at Ferrari, as he finds he gets more out of the crew in the garage by speaking in their native tongue.

James' book on the 1998 season of 7-time World Champion, Michael Schumacher, was released under two names: Michael Schumacher - Driven to Extremes and Michael Schumacher - Quest for Redemption. The book was a best seller, selling over 30,000 copies.
