James: (On the feel of his new album "Some Kind of Trouble") It's here-and-now, but it has the kind of blind optimism of the '80s when as a race of humans, we believed we could get together and do anything.
James: (On if upbeat songs on his new CD "Some Kind of Trouble" will surprise people) Yeah, I'm definitely known for a couple of sad, miserable songs.
James: Things take a long time, but when it's right, things move fast.
James: I'm going to be rude about this before anyone else has the chance - thank you so much for the award for the most overplayed song.
James: It's always nice to be able to capture your life's experiences in a song and hold the emotion in that way.
James: (on fraternizing with his groupies) I've always thought it was my responsibility to do that. I have been told by people that I should not be seen clubbing with good-looking women, but I can't see why not. Why be a pop star otherwise? I have fun with it and I am honest and open about the way I lead my life and don't mislead anyone. I've had the time of my life and thank God for that, it would be such a waste otherwise.
James: (revealing that attending boarding school made him "intensely emotional") Being sent away to boarding school at seven is as great an inspiration as any songwriter could have - to be taken away from one's family and locked away for 10 years. It does create an incredible intensity of emotion.
James: (revealing he finds it easier to write his feelings in a song than saying them in person) In a way song writing can almost be detrimental, because suddenly you find an outlet that is a kind of cheating. You don't need to have direct communication. You can say, 'I can't describe it to you, but I will record it and send it to you.'
James: I had a mild [eBay] addiction... (my sister) was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. The planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season and there were no trains. I ended up whacking it on eBay, 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armour! Desperate to get to a funeral in Southern Ireland, please help!' The bids flooded in and the guy who won had a helicopter. He flew her to the funeral. That was three years ago, this summer they're getting married!
James: (asked if he was nervous about performing "You're Beautiful" prior to the 2006 Australian Logies awards) No, but I'm genuinely nervous about my hangover tomorrow. I'm looking forward to having beers. I'm going out on the town. They're always good for a laugh - they're pretty wild!
James: I think sensitive is the wrong description of me. I'm British, actually, so quite bad at expressing myself in conversation, an any ex-girlfriend will tell you. I'm probably emotionally stunted.
James: (about studying engineering) I thought we were going to fly planes, but we just pulled metals apart – the brochure was very misleading.
