Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1905, James Nusser was one of four brothers. He started acting and performing in radio and also worked with his good friend, Jim Backus. He was best known for his portrayal of Louis Pheeters, the sad-faced town drunk on "Gunsmoke" (1961-75). He appeared in a few films including: It Should Happen to You (1954,debut), Hell Canyon Outlaws (1957), Hail,Hero! (1969) and Cahill: U.S. Marshal (1973) which was his last. His television credits include several on Gunsmoke before he was a regular as various characters, and also, The Line-up, Gangbusters, Perry Mason, and Wild Wild West. He died in Hollywood, California in 1979 at the age of 74. Through he never received an emmy or even a nomination for his work on Gunsmoke, he is the highlight, joy, and saddness of many of it's episodes.
