Born in Fort Eustas, VA to Dianne and Herely W. Emick but was raised in Oral, South Dakota. He graduated from South Dakota State University.
He won acclaim appearing on the Broadway stage as "Joe Hardy" in the 1994 revival of "Damm Yankees". His other Broadway credits include: Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, The Rocky Horror Show, The Full Monty, The Boy from Oz, Ring of Fire and Drift.
In 1994 he won a Tony award for his performance in "Damm Yankees" as well as the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical, and the Theatre World Award.

When he is not starring on Broadway, or in television, he works on his father's sheep farm in Oral, South Dakota.
