Jeanette MacDonald was one of the most popular actresses in the 1930's. Together with Nelson Eddy, they made 9 films together for MGM. They had a torrid affair that spanned many years and both their lives ended bittersweet. She died as a result of a heart
If you've seen the movie 'Naughty Marietta', 'Rose Marie', or the first MGM movie in color, 'Sweethearts', then you've been subjected to Jeanette MacDonald. Her wit, beauty, and lilting soprano voice still leave a mark on Hollywood today. She was teamed up with Nelson Eddy and together, they made a handful of movies to uplift the people of the 1930's during the Depression. At one time in her career, she was the highest paid actress of all time. Nelson would also be, at one time, the highest paid baritone ever. It was love at first sight for the two, but because of personal and business reasons, the two never married. Through the years, they carried on romantically, even though they were both married. Jeanette was known as both an angel and a witch to work with. She suffered from bouts of depression, extreme weight gain and loss, and dizzy spells. She had a weak heart and that finally caught up to her in 1965. She passed away from a heart attack. Nelson would outlive her just a few more years. He suffered a stroke while performing on stage. Their movies are classics today. See Jeanette at her best in 'Naughty Marietta' (1935) and 'Rose Marie'(1936).
